Had to formally declare a major this semester — junior year now, paperwork catches up to reality eventually. Put down Computer Science, obviously. Advisor asked what area I'm interested in and I said "machine learning" and she nodded like that was a completely normal, unremarkable answer, which it is, now, in a way it wasn't when I first got interested in 2017. Funny how fast "the weird thing I do alone in my room" became "the extremely mainstream thing half my graduating class is also declaring an interest in." Coursework is mostly stuff I already know at this point, which makes classes easy but not exactly engaging. Doing the assignments on autopilot, spending the actual mental energy on PROMETHEUS in the evenings same as always. Professor mentioned an opportunity to do undergrad research with a faculty member next year. Politely declined when I looked into it — their research direction doesn't overlap with anything I care about, and I'd rather keep full control of my own project than split time on someone else's.
