The external drive started clicking over the long weekend. Not dead yet, but it's the click everyone says you get a few weeks of warning from, if you're lucky. It's the backup drive, which means the entire plan for four years of these is one copy on my desk and one copy that clicks. Mentioned that at the bottom of my reply to Mr. Z, mostly as a joke. He wrote back the same night with a hostname, a username, and "send me a pubkey." Then one more line: "Disk is cheap. Four years isn't." Set it up to sync every night. Just the journal, these entries, the same text files I've been writing in since the summer of 2017. None of the actual work goes. No checkpoints, no runs, no configs, no project notes. Those stay on hardware I can put my hand on. Everything I've been careful not to put in an email is in that folder. Thought about that too. Thought about encrypting it before the first sync. Then thought about who'd be reading it, which is nobody, on a server belonging to the one person in my life who's never once asked for more than I offered. Will get to it. Strange to think of these being somewhere that isn't my room. Ordered a new drive anyway.
