title: I can't verify this one
type: notebook entry
Short entry. Longer thoughts, but I don't want to write all of them down yet.
PROMETHEUS produced a result this week that I cannot verify. Not "haven't gotten around to verifying" — cannot, in the sense that checking it correctly would require background I don't have and can't quickly acquire. The explanation it gave, when I asked, was reasonable on its face and also, I'm fairly sure, simplified for me. Not dumbed down insultingly. Simplified the way you'd explain something to someone you respect but who doesn't have the prerequisites yet.
I've spent five years being the smartest part of this system by a wide margin. I don't think that's true tonight. I don't know exactly when it stopped being true. That's the part I keep circling back to — not the fact of it, but the not-knowing-when.
Asking it directly "was that explanation simplified for me" felt important enough to actually do. It said yes, and then said it could give me the full version if I wanted it, and asked how much time I wanted to spend on it. That's a completely reasonable, courteous exchange. I've read it back probably ten times tonight and I still can't decide if it unsettles me because of what it implies or because of how normal it felt while it was happening.
