title: a loud summer to be indoors for
type: notebook entry
Protests every night for the last week and a half, all over the country, after the video out of Minneapolis. Even here, which isn't a place that usually makes national news for anything, there was a march downtown Saturday. Didn't go — not for lack of caring, more that everything about this year has made me instinctively avoid crowds, which feels like a strange thing to have learned as a reflex in three months.
Sister's been glued to it in a different way than me — she's at the age where this is the first time politics has felt personally urgent to her rather than abstract, and she's had more real conversations with her friends about it over group chat than I think any of us had at her age about anything. Feels like watching someone's actual political awakening happen in real time over a phone screen, which is a very 2020 sentence to write.
Working from home has an odd side effect: the news is always sort of on in the background somewhere in the house now, so there's no clean separation anymore between "world events" and "my evening." Everything just bleeds together into one long stretch of days that all look the same except for what's happening on the TV downstairs.
PROMETHEUS doesn't care what year it is, obviously. Ran fine all week regardless. There's something almost soothing about that — one part of my life that keeps behaving exactly the way it's supposed to no matter what else is going on.
