Went back through entries from a couple years ago tonight, mostly procrastinating on an actual technical write-up. Struck by how much more I used to explain — not just what I did, but why, step by step, like I was writing for someone who might not follow otherwise. I don't do that anymore. Rereading recent entries, I'm noticing how much I've started assuming — assuming I'll remember the context, assuming a future reader (if there ever is one) will have followed along closely enough to not need the connective tissue spelled out. Some of that's just efficiency. Writing gets tighter the more practice you have. But some of it, I think, is that I've started writing more for myself and less for an imagined audience, which is a different thing than tightening prose. It's narrowing who this is actually for. Not sure if that's a natural evolution or a quiet kind of closing off. Probably some of both. Wanted to name it before it became invisible to me the way habits do once they're old enough.
