Almost missed a genuinely serious bug today because I assumed the alarming result was some kind of April Fools' joke from — I don't know, myself, past-me setting up a prank I forgot about, which isn't even a thing I do, but my brain went there anyway before it went to "this might just be real." It was real. A silent data-type coercion in one of the evaluation pipeline's newer components had been quietly rounding a subset of scores in a way that made certain proposals look better than they actually were, for about eleven days before I caught it. Not catastrophic — nothing acted on the bad scores without a manual review step catching most of it — but eleven days of slightly-wrong signal feeding back into what gets tried next is not nothing. Fixed it, audited the affected window, threw out anything that looked contaminated by it. Annoyed at myself. Also weirdly reassured — a real, ordinary, explainable bug, the most mundane kind of thing that can go wrong, and the review process caught the worst of it before it mattered. Sometimes I need the reminder that most of what goes wrong here really is just software being software.
