Read it years ago the first time, laughed it off as rich-guy paranoia theater. Read it again tonight and didn't laugh even once. Kept going. Peter Thiel's New Zealand citizenship, granted after something like twelve days actually spent in the country. Bloomberg's old piece about bunker companies quietly shipping units there for tech founders. Reid Hoffman, on the record, guessing more than half of Silicon Valley's billionaires have some kind of contingency plan for the world going seriously wrong. I want to be honest about why I'm writing this down instead of letting it stay a curious rabbit hole. It's not because I think any of those guys knew something specific. I think it's closer to the opposite — they were reacting to a generalized, diffuse fear about instability, pandemics, climate, whatever. Vague apocalypse, no particular cause. I have something considerably more specific sitting in a room in this house, and I have spent zero minutes, until tonight, actually thinking about what my own version of "a place I can fly to" would look like. Not doing anything about that yet. Just noticing that I read three hours of articles about rich men building bunkers and didn't once think it was an overreaction. That's new. Writing it down so I remember when it started.
